About the Author
Sebastião Salgado was born on February 8th, 1944 in Aimorés, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. He lives in Paris. Having studied economics, Salgado began his career as a professional photographer in 1973 in Paris, working with the photo agencies Sygma, Gamma, and Magnum Photos until 1994, when he and Lélia Wanick Salgado formed Amazonas images, an agency created exclusively for his work.He has travelled in over 100 countries for his photographic projects. Most of these, besides appearing in numerous press publications, have also been presented in books such asOther Americas (1986), Sahel: l’homme en détresse (1986),Sahel: el fin del camino (1988),Workers (1993), Terra (1997),Migrations and Portraits (2000), and Africa (2007).Touring exhibitions of this work have been, and continue to be, presented throughout the world.Sebastião Salgado has been awarded numerous major photographic prizes in recognition of his accomplishments. He is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, and an honorary member of the Academy of Arts and Sciences in the United States.In 2004, Sebastião Salgado began a project namedGenesis, aiming at the presentation of the unblemished faces of nature and humanity. It consists of a series of photographs of landscapes and wildlife, as well as of human communities that continue to live in accordance with their ancestral traditions and cultures. This body of work is conceived as a potential path to humanity’s rediscovery of itself in nature.Together, Lélia and Sebastião have worked since the 1990’s on the restoration of a small part of the Atlantic Forest in Brazil. In 1998 they succeeded in turning this land into a nature reserve and created the Instituto Terra. The Instituto is dedicated to a mission of reforestation, conservation and environmental education.

Through the exquisite images Salgado takes and the equally masterful quality of the prints, he is able to bring often difficult subjects to the viewer and cause the viewer to connect with the humanity of the situation portrayed. He evokes and provokes people to respond and, from my experience, care. This is why Mr. Gould holds Salgado in such high esteem.This book, which reads more like a letter to a friend in its meanderings, explores the passion and vision that has fueled Salgado's body of work. The photos included are wonderful and his honesty with discussing not only his Muse but also his despair and concern is revelatory. What becomes obvious via his imagery and writing is that Sebastiao Salgado cares deeply for humanity and the environment. I personally feel that his body of work would enhance any humanities course. After reading From My Land to the Planet, it's a richer experience when I view his photographs confirming Mr. Gould's pronouncement about Salgado's importance. Thank you, Mr. Salgado, for writing this important book.

She transmits in a transparent and meaningful way, the work and life of S. Salgado. She captures, the passion to carry out his mission of life as a photographer and activist but also like a human been through by his own voice.This book really achieves, a positively and deeply impact in the people who read it and end up making it their own from the heart.She makes her own photograph of S.Salgado in her journalistic work, a beautiful tribute to his life and work and to those who are part of it (many people included). I. Francq and S. Salgado made a great team in this book. I love it.
Great book! i really enjoyed reading it! Not a photography book, but more like an autobiography book. Sebastiao Salgado is one of the greatest photographers of all the time!
An excellent introduction to the haunting work and tireless life of Salgado. You will linger at his words and be moved by his take on the reality of our life on this planet.
Great book but a little short and do not expect a lesson on photography. It is the description of a life experience and a way to see things through lenses.
Very interesting book not only for photographers but for anyone who wants to read about an interesting life.
