Review
"Dr. Max van Manen is a giant among contemporary phenomenologists and his work continues to inspire. Max's new book is very comprehensive, so comprehensive that it tells the story of the history of what it means to be human and "in the world." The book provides not only the traditional foundations of phenomenology in terms of philosophy/ies and method/s, but also, challenging us to reflect and dialogue about new thoughts or ideas that we may not have thought about. Max's use of etymology is so profound. One can put themselves in his stories and explanations of the lifeworld and "see" meaning at a very deep level. I highly recommend this book to faculty and students who are in search of a scholarly approach to philosophy and method in phenomenology. But I also recommend this book for all those who are in search of a fuller understanding of the meaning of meaning. " ―Marilyn A. Ray, Florida Atlantic University (Emeritus)"Max van Manen is a great teacher and a true maestro in the craft of phenomenology and phenomenological writing….The book is comprehensive and covers an ambitious range of topics, but keeps returning to its main focus: that of understanding the phenomenology of practice.…In the way of a master teacher, van Manen shows us how to do the phenomenology of practice by himself engaging in thoughtful and reflective practice of phenomenological pedagogy….For any serious student of phenomenology―and in particular those engaged in the phenomenology of practice―this book should prove an essential resource and a challenging but rewarding guide." ―Irena Madjar, Qualitative Health Research"Throughout his academic career, educator Max van Manen has been one of the most accessible commentators on phenomenological method. [This book] is a masterly account of the nature of phenomenology and the lived experience of doing phenomenological research." ―Environmental & Architectural Phenomenology“I think the labour of this extraordinarily deep and comprehensive text should bear fruit in its immediate uptake for any researchers planning to present the lived experience of a phenomenon without drifting too quickly into conceptual analysis. The author has profoundly enriched researcher practitioners, seeking to understand and use phenomenological approaches...” —Peter Willis, Phenomenology & Practice

Great to have a new text from Max van Manen. Researching Lived Experience and Writing in the Dark have been my 'go to' books for my doctoral thesis over the past couple of years. This new book from van Manen is a very welcome addition. If you are doing any form of phenomenological research or writing, van Manen is worth having on your shelf, particularly to go to when you get lost or stuck in the writing phase. He not only explains how to write in a phenomenological style, he demonstrates it in his fine attention to detail and use of language.
Great breakdown and analysis of the great minds of phenomenology. In the process we learn about phenomenological process from the greats as well through the expert interpretation of Manen. A lot of great references and stepping off points for deeper understanding.
Don't let the word "practice" in the title fool you into thinking this is a book about methodology. It is not. It is a book about practice in the sense of "practice makes perfect" or "meditation practice." That being said, there is a good review of the basic history of phenomenological writers in here, as well as some useful information about how to make phenomenology a practice as part of your way of looking at and reflecting on the world.
This book its amazing. the most cool thing about this book is that it helps you to understand and locate your previous phenomenology experience which in my case was with psychology and anthropology. It does not require prior experience as it is pretty clear with the basics and takes its tima to get deep in more complex concepts.
This book is the stuff researchers and theorists need to know about the complex and philosophical world of phenomenological work.
For those who do Phenomenology, those who wish to, and those who are curious, this is a wonderful book by a wonderful author. Van Manen gives a concise history of the philosophy and gives practitioners a way to enter into this process.
Best book I've read about writing a phenomenological study. This author views phenomenology more as an art than a science...
Respectful to the reader. Clear and stimulating--thought provoking...
