About the Author

Betty G. Birney has won many awards for writing for television, including an Emmy, three Humanitas Prizes, and a Writers Guild of America Award. Her first Humphrey book, The World According to Humphrey, was chosen for the One Book One School program. In addition to the Humphrey series, she is the author of The Seven Wonders of Sassafrass Springs and The Princess and the Peabodys. As with all of Betty Birney's Humphrey series books, this one is a huge hit! You have the same wonderful, caring hamster telling the story from his point of view. It's now spring with Humphrey's 2nd classroom of students.I love how the series teaches respect, consideration of others, good manners, doing the right thing, and problem solving in a setting that kids can understand and relate.I started reading this to my oldest when he was in 2nd grade although he could've read it himself. My kindergartener would listen until he fell asleep. Now I'm going through the series again for my youngest who is now in 3rd grade. Sometimes my older boys (now teenagers) will come in and listen as well. Super good memories being made with Humphrey!

The World According to Humphrey series is perfect for children from age 5 - 12. I think I'm on my 4th time reading them aloud to my children at bedtime. As parents we all know how boring it can get reading the same books over and over to our children, but, even after multiple read-throughs, I'm not bored yet! My kids know the names of all the children in Ms.Brisbaine's class (both years) and they like to comment on how they might help Humphrey help his friends. Do yourself a favor and introduce your early reader to these wonderful stories.

What can I say? These Humphrey books are my grandson's favorite series. I can certainly see why. I also lover Betty Birney's creative style of writing--from the perspective of the Hamster. There are lessons for the reader to learn in all of her books. My grandson has the full series now with the release of the Spring According to Humphrey in paperback. We love these books!

The Humphrey series is my 7-year old's favorite with "Bad Kitty" a close second!

My children love the Humphrey series. The books are funny and not to childish and present real life problems for a Kindergarten and elementary school aged group of children. They have been begging for more and we will definitely comply!
