I found this book beautifully written . However it certainly is an erudite text ! That being said taking the time to read it is worth it . No matter where you start the experience is a delight . The historic context is presented to the reader and makes clear just how what went on so long ago has given us what we have today .
Jaroslav Pelikan, is one of the foremost scholars on historic Christianty in the world. This book, the second in a series, examines the Eatern Christian tradition between 600 and 1700. Many of the improtant issues and controversies are discussed to include many of the councils about the nature of Christ and prevelant heresies of the period and the schism between the Eastern and Western church.The reader will find much information and refernces on the inconoclast controversy, Filioque controversy, and the rise of the Islamic relgion in the Christian world. A short review cannot do this book jsutice. A must resource for any serious Christian student. His research is immpecable and his righting style easy to follow, which is surprising considering the scope and scholarly detail of this book.

If you are interested in the way church doctrine developed as I was, buy this series. It seems like a lot of material, but Pelikan is actually brief while thorough. Church history is no simple study. They are a good buy!
I learned alot from the first three volumes of this series. Great scholarship and worth reading to get an understanding of church history up to the time just preceding the reformation.
I am greatly impressed by Pelikan's credentials and am finding this volume even better than the first. Of course, my sympathies lay with Orthodoxy so that may be expected. Impressive and handy references to support documents are made throughout. Highly recommended.
A rich and thoughtful history of doctrine. It has the advantage of presenting a history of ideas rather than a historical panorama of the great thinkers of Eastern Christianity.
