Antony and Cleopatra

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Readers who recognize Goldsworthy (How Rome Fell) as Britain's most prolific and perhaps finest popular historian of Roman times will find him once again at his best. Shakespeare and Hollywood portray Antony and Cleopatra as star-crossed lovers, but historians understand that Antony (83–30 B.C.E.) was Julius Caesar's right-hand man, ruthless and ambitious. Cleopatra (69–30 B.C.E.) was not Egyptian but Greek, descended from Ptolemy, whose family had ruled Egypt for three centuries. She became Caesar's mistress in 48 B.C.E. In the Roman civil war that followed Caesar's assassination four years later, Antony shared power with Caesar's adopted son, Octavian (later emperor Augustus), until they quarreled. Antony and Cleopatra first met in 41 B.C.E. and ruled Egypt together for three years until Octavian's invading armies approached, at which point they both committed suicide. Unlike many competing authors, Goldsworthy never disguises the scanty evidence for many historical events. Some of his best passages review surviving documents, discuss their biases, draw parallels from his vast knowledge of Roman history, and recount what probably happened unless, as he often admits in this thoughtful, deeply satisfying work, even speculation is impossible. From Booklist

A classicist on the ascent, Goldsworthy previously wrote Caesar (2006), to which this title is a natural sequel. It can be seen as a corrective to Diana Preston’s Cleopatra and Antony (2009), which strove to give the Egyptian queen top billing in ancient history’s most famous romance. Affection there may have been between Cleopatra and Caesar’s right-hand man, but love was a political instrument in Cleopatra’s relationship to Caesar and, after his assassination, to Marcus Antonius. Goldsworthy stresses Cleopatra’s twin goals of keeping her throne (to which Caesar restored her) and warding off Egypt’s annexation by the Roman Empire. As for Antony, Goldsworthy, reminding readers of contemporary hostility to him, depicts a personality to counter the condemnations left by Cicero and Augustan propaganda. Still, Antony does not come off well in Goldsworthy’s estimation of him as a mediocre general and a self-interested power seeker. Narrating his and Cleopatra’s parts in the tumultuous end of the Roman Republic, Goldsworthy skillfully integrates the partial and partisan source material into an accessible presentation of a classic tale from classical times. --Gilbert Taylor

"Antony and Cleopatra" is another excellent work by Adrian Goldsworthy. His grasp of the ancient world is stunning and his ability to relate its history to the modern reader is unmatched. He brings Antony and Cleopatra to life as real people and dispels the incorrect assumptions and beliefs that surround them. While they may have loved one another, their relationship was much more complicated and interesting. Their political (and in Antony's case, psychological) needs were always paramount. Antony is revealed as a needy boy in a man's body, who had little ability as a strategist and military commander, but who had an enormous appetite for worldly pleasures. Cleopatra is shown to have been very astute politically, and whose primary goal was to remain in power and keep Egypt as independent as possible. This book is a must read for all who are interested in ancient Rome, the transition from Roman Republic to Empire, Antony, Cleopatra, or Octavian. Speaking of Octavian, I can't help but wonder what would have happened if Cleopatra had tried to seduce him instead of Antony. Considering Octavian's strict Roman elitism, I doubt it would have gone well for Cleopatra.

This is not a Taylor and Burton "Cleopatra".nor is it Shakespeare .For those who have no knowledge of this time frame ,Mr Goldsworthy takes the reader to the origin of the political and social tormentor which these two characters would have to perform in.Both were overly ambitious which caused them to realized that Rome did not revolve around them.Octavian was the master chess player. He had tortured under Caesar .He was ambitious but surround himself with capable men ,Aggriba for one.Cleopatra was more skill at this game than the self absorbed Antony.I found myself interested in Cleo. because of her skill of politics even to the end .First Cesar ,who recognized this in her and then Antony who was naive but whom she could and did manipulate into doing her biding.Antony's fault was he failed to remember he was Roman and that Rome/Octavian would not endure being challenged by any one,Could Cleopatra have seduced Octavian? Would he have allow her to do so? My bets on Octavian, he was to young and not naive..ROME and a EMPIRE was his..Why take the risk?

I do like Mr. Goldsworthy's books but there is somewhere that he is short of Mary Beard. Ms. Beard firsts establishes her credibility by demonstrating how loose and disconnected the fabric of historica record is of this time. Goldsworthy sometimes does the same but his uncertainty often becomes certain by the end of the book. For example, early on he tells us that there is little evidence that Cleopatra was a hussy. Later on he states that she had only been with one man before Antony. Come on. It could be that he is so good at getting inside the speaker's mind that at some point, you pull back and say, no, you don't know that person's mind. Still good though.

Let's face it; there is nothing much new here in historical terms, but Mr. Goldsworthy's insights and reinterpretations of fact make this a first rate book, particularly in his portrayal of Antony - always a very illusive character. Goldsworthy paints him as an entitled aristocrat with little more going for him other than privilege and bloodthirstiness. (In other words, a Mafia Don). He paints Cleopatra boldly as well, and for the first time offers up the compelling argument that she was never more than a pale attendant to Antony's supreme power. Films and novels paint her as the prime motivator, but Goldsworthy quite rightly states that she would be nothing of historical note without Antony's favor. Crisp and insightful, and a very easy read.. .

Great telling of the history of these two characters I like how he explains the rise and fall of the ptolamaic dynasty and explains how there Greek and not Egyptian even the name cleopatra is not an Egyptian name Alexander had a sister named cleopatra IV read many books on this subject and Adrian goldworthy is the best i read other books like Caesar life of a colosos read that three times through he gives u a chronological view and starts from the beginning

No one writes history as interestingly as Goldsworthy. I've read each of his books and he continues to consistently present history in a factual but entertaining way. Excellent insights into the strengths and weaknesses of Antony as well as a full scope background of the Roman Republic in upheaval. Cleopatra is presented as a, "ruler," intent on keeping Egypt intact and prospering under the Roman empire. A very well-written book.
